INSIGHT INTO HISTORY
The route provides an opportunity to look into the various historical heritage of Salacgriva and the region, get to know the unique historical evidence and learn about known and lesser-known tourist attractions - which have played a greater or lesser role in the history of our towns.
#1 Svētciems manor
Svētciems or Sveiciems (Neu-Salis) was founded as a manor after the same name (Dorff Swatzhem) after 1638 and belonged to the Vecsalaca castle district.
#2 Vecsalaca manor
At the18th century Vecsalaca Manor, acquired by an old family of landlords - Ferzens - became an important center of economic and cultural life in the region.

#4 Ferroconcrete bridge in Annasmuiža
Ferroconcrete bridge in Annasmuiža the first ferroconcrete bridge in the Baltic States was built in 1908, but founded in June 1909. It had a great importance in the development of traffic routes in the Salaca region, because in the centre of Salacgriva there was only a ferry at that time.
#5 The legend of Salaca castle mound
It’s impossible to say how old Salacgrīva really is. The most ancient place is considered the castle mound on the right bank of Salaca river.
#6 Beginnings of seafaring
Where to look for the beginnings of Latvian seafaring? A great place to starti s Ainaži – a charming little seaside town which in the 19th century was one of the most important sailor and seafaring town in the Baltics. You’ll find the messengers of those times everywhwere.
#7 Raftsmen
Many people definitely remember the Rafting Festival in Salacgriva 10 years ago. At that time the 70th anniversary year of Salacgriva town was the driving force behind the fact that the legend of Salacgriva Bubis, i.e. Roberts Spuriņš, suggested that people and the Salaca itself should remind them of the times when the river brought rafts to the sea from near and far.
#8 Ancient lamprey weir
Lamprey weir is a traditional and unique type of fishing, but lamprey fishing in the world is not widespread, so what you can see here in Latvia, Salacgriva, you may not see anywhere else in the world.
#9 Salacgriva light-house
The Salacgriva Lighthouse is located on the right bank of the Salaca River in the port area.
#10 Port of Salacgriva
The Port of Salacgriva is located on the northeastern part of the Gulf of Riga at the mouth of the River Salaca, 100 km from Riga and 13 km from the Latvian-Estonian border.
#11 Salacgriva breakwater
In 1870, a breakwater was built out of boulders in the mouth of the Salaca River and the riverbed was deepened, which allowed larger ships to enter the port instead of the existing barges.
#12 Riga Street
Riga Street is the only paved street in Salacgriva and has always played an important role in the social and cultural life of the county and town.
